Mactan Island lies a few kilometers southeast of Cebu mainland. It is a coral island and the nearest from Cebu City. Because of its proximity, the diving infrastructure is well developed and many visitors can be in the water within an hour or so from flying in. The island offers heavenly high-quality dive sites. For advanced divers, Nalusuan and Hilutungan island marine sanctuaries are the areas to go, two of Mactan’s most popular areas. For excellent night diving, the best areas are Kontiki, Buyong, Marigondon and Lido Point. There are a lot of motorized water sports around Mactan area and new divers are advised to go with diving professionals during their trips. Tingo Point northern most part of Olango Island, which is 20 minutes boat ride west coast of Mactan Island is extremely deep and divers can see a lot of Thresher Sharks and large Tuna. Moalboal is located west coast of Cebu mainland and is a frequently visited diving destination. Novice divers can practice diving on the reef near Panagsama and advanced divers can have a thrilling adventure on Pescador Island. Pescador Island is known for its beautiful and largely untouched marine life. This island sits on rock cliffs, that extends to a mass of caverns and overhangs, the most dramatic of which is Pescador Cathedral, a large underwater cavern reached by a 15m wide funnel and descending to 35m. Pescador Island offers many a steep wall dive, where divers can see an array of large sponges, soft corals, black corals and gorgonians. During early morning dives, be surrounded by a school of Sardines that attract bigger predators like the Thresher Sharks, Mackerel and Tuna. Also, expect to see Whitetip and Hammerhead Sharks, Turtles and Sea Snakes, and occasionally some Whale Sharks. Another diving spot is found in Sunken Island which is an underwater plateau that starts at 24 meters that slopes down to 40 meters. Malapascua Island is a small but picture perfect and vibrant island off the northeastern coast of Cebu. It is known to have a huge diversity of marine life and new discoveries filled with pure delight. Also known to divers to be a place to see a lot of Thresher Sharks and Manta Rays that regularly visit in the cleaning stations on Monad Shoal – best to dive in the early morning to see these beautiful creatures and expect to see an amazing range of smaller fish like the Mandarin Fish on twilight dives. You can also expect Hammer Heads and White Tips by Gato Island. There are 5 shipwrecks around the island, some are quite far away and dive operators only go when enough divers are interested. The one closest is The Pioneer, a Japanese warship sunk in 1944. The Pioneer is a nicely preserved shipwreck and home to schools of Glass Fish and huge Scorpion Fishes lie everywhere. Liloan is at the southern most part of the island and is a small peaceful place. During March and April, divers can expect to swim alongside a lot of Whale Sharks, Dolphins and Manta Rays. Antenna Point and Marine Village House Reef are best for beginner divers. You can expect a lot soft and hard corals and plenty of normal-sized tropical fish including Scorpion Fish and Snake Eels. Liloan also has a Ferry wreck and only ideal for experienced technical divers. The ferry sunk unexpectedly and not a typical diver’s wreck. It lies on its port side in over 50 meters of water, easily the largest one around the area. Solo divers can join the team certified for technical dives. Sumilon Island is 30 minutes east boat ride from Liloan Island, a piece of heaven for open water and advanced divers. It has 4 major dive sites, Garden Eel Plaza, Nikki’s Wall, Coral Landscape and Julie’s Rock. This island is known to be the first marine sanctuary established in the country. During December and May, divers can expect a good variety of Pelagic, Manta Rays, Tuna, White Tip and Hammerhead Sharks and on rare occasions some Whale Sharks.
